Clutter by the front door is mostly things that never got a home: shoes kicked off,
a bag on the floor, keys somewhere. A small entryway doesn’t need furniture so much
as four landing spots, one for each of those things, placed where your hands already
go.

**The short answer**

Give each daily item one spot: a low shoe rack or tray, hooks at two heights for
bags and coats, a small dish or wall pocket for keys and mail, and a basket for
hats and gloves. Keep the walkway clear and the door swing free.

## 1. Watch where things land for three days

Don’t tidy yet. For three days, notice where shoes, bags, keys, and mail end up
when you come home. Those spots are your plan: storage works best where things already
land.

## 2. Measure the space you can give up

**What to measure**

 * The wall width beside the door, and how far the door swings.
 * The walkway: how much floor you need to walk through comfortably, with a bag.
 * Floor depth available for a shoe rack or bench without narrowing the walkway
   too much.
 * Any light switch, outlet, thermostat, or vent on the wall.

## 3. Four landing spots

| Spot | For | Options |
| Floor | Daily shoes | Boot tray, slim shoe rack, or shoe cabinet |
| Wall, high | Coats, umbrellas | Hooks or a rail with hooks |
| Wall, middle | Bags, backpacks, dog leash | A second row of hooks at a lower height |
| Surface or wall pocket | Keys, mail, sunglasses | A small shelf with a dish, or a wall-mounted pocket |

Keep only daily shoes at the door: one or two pairs per person. Everything else
goes to closets. Our [small-closet shoe guide](https://kindredspacefinds.com/small-closet-shoe-storage/)
covers the overflow.

### Hooks at two heights

Coats on higher hooks, bags lower, so they don’t stack on each other. If children
use the entryway, a third row at their height means they can hang their own things.

### Keys and mail

A dish on a narrow shelf, or a wall pocket, gives keys one place. Sort mail on the
spot: recycle junk immediately and move the rest to wherever you deal with papers.

## Worked example: a 36-inch wall by the door

Imagine 36 inches of wall beside the front door and room for a rack about 12 inches
deep without blocking the walkway. A boot tray or slim two-tier rack takes the floor.
Above it, a rail with four hooks at coat height and three at bag height covers two
adults. A narrow shelf at hand height above the hooks holds a key dish.

Check that the door still swings fully open, that coats don’t cover the light switch,
and that the rack doesn’t narrow the path so much that you step around it.

**The no-buy starting point:** a doormat-sized tray for shoes and one existing bowl
for keys, used for a week, tells you whether you need more.

## 4. What to buy, and in what order

 1. A boot tray or slim shoe rack.
 2. Wall hooks or a hook rail, mounted into studs or with anchors rated for the load.
 3. A small shelf or wall pocket for keys and mail.
 4. A basket for hats, gloves, and dog gear.

## Questions

What if there’s no wall space by the door?

Use the back of a nearby closet door for hooks, or an over-door rack on the front
door if it clears the frame. A shoe tray can still go just inside.

Bench or no bench?

A bench helps if you sit to put shoes on and you have the depth. In a narrow entry,
a slim rack plus a nearby chair often works better.

I rent. Can I add hooks?

Over-door hooks and freestanding coat stands need no holes. Adhesive hooks can work
for light items; test them and follow removal instructions.

## Kitchen Sink Cabinet Organization: Work Around the Pipes and Disposal

The cabinet under a kitchen sink is wider than a bathroom vanity but more crowded:
a drain trap, often a garbage disposal, a dishwasher hose, shutoff valves, and sometimes
a filter. Good storage here works around all of it and keeps the valves reachable
in an emergency.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Empty the cabinet, check for leaks, and mark the pipes, disposal, and valves. Use
the two side lanes for cleaning supplies in handled caddies or narrow pull-outs,
keep the center clear for plumbing access, and add a tray to catch drips.

## 1. Empty the cabinet and check for leaks

Take everything out and look at the cabinet floor and pipes with a flashlight. Dampness,
staining, or a musty smell means fix the leak first; storage will only hide it.
Run the tap and the dishwasher and watch the connections for a few minutes.

## 2. Map what’s in the way

**Mark and measure**

 * The drain trap and how far it drops from the sink.
 * The garbage disposal, if you have one, and its cord and switch.
 * The dishwasher drain hose and supply line.
 * Hot and cold shutoff valves: these must stay reachable.
 * Any water filter, hot-water dispenser, or outlet.
 * The clear width of each side lane, its depth, and its height under the lowest
   pipe.

## 3. Divide it into three zones

LEFT LANE
Daily cleaning

CENTER
Pipes, disposal, valves

RIGHT LANE
Bags, sponges, backups

Planning sketch only, not to scale. Your plumbing may sit off-center.

| Zone | Store | Storage to consider |
| Side lane you reach first | Dish soap refill, dishwasher detergent, daily sprays | A handled caddy or narrow pull-out |
| Other side lane | Trash bags, sponges, backup supplies | A bin or a small stacking drawer |
| Center | Nothing, or a low tray | Keep clear for the valves and disposal |
| Door back | Gloves, brushes, a towel | Small hooks or a door caddy, if it clears the pipes |

For specific narrow organizers and their dimensions, see our [under-sink organizer comparison](https://kindredspacefinds.com/under-sink-organizers-compared/).
The same fit checks apply in the kitchen.

## Worked example: a 36-inch sink base

Imagine a 36-inch sink base with a disposal in the center and a dishwasher hose
on the right. The left lane measures 9 inches wide and 20 inches deep before the
trap. The right lane is 8 inches wide but the hose crosses it at 12 inches high.

Left lane: a narrow pull-out or a handled caddy up to about 8 inches wide holds
daily cleaners. Right lane: a low bin under 11 inches tall stays under the hose,
with trash bags and sponges. The center stays clear so you can reach the disposal
reset button and the valves. Before buying, check each product’s footprint against
these lanes, and leave space to slide it in past the door hinges.

**The no-buy starting point:** group cleaners in a shallow box with a handle for
a week. If you pull out the whole group when you clean, a caddy is the right buy.

## 4. Safety and maintenance

 * Keep shutoff valves and the disposal reset button reachable at all times.
 * Store cleaning products in their original containers and follow their labels;
keep them out of children’s reach, using a cabinet lock if needed.
 * Don’t mix cleaning products, and keep bleach and ammonia-based cleaners apart.
 * Add a waterproof tray or liner so small drips are visible and easy to clean.
 * Check under the sink every few months for new dampness.

## 5. What to buy

 1. A waterproof cabinet liner or tray.
 2. A handled caddy or narrow pull-out for daily cleaners.
 3. A low bin for bags and backups.
 4. A child-safety lock, if needed.

## Questions

Can I store food or dishes under the sink?

It’s better not to. Leaks, cleaning products, and humidity make it a poor place
for food or items that touch food.

Is a two-tier organizer worth it?

Only if the upper tier clears the trap or hose along its whole path. Measure the
lowest pipe in that lane and the loaded height of the top tier.

What about the trash can?

A pull-out trash can usually needs a dedicated cabinet. Under a sink, plumbing often
leaves too little width; check the lanes first.

## Over-the-Door Pantry Racks: Will One Fit Your Door?

An over-the-door rack turns the back of a pantry door into shelves for spices, cans,
and snacks. It’s one of the few pantry upgrades that needs no tools, but it is also
easy to buy one that stops the door from closing. Four quick checks prevent that.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Measure the door’s thickness, the gap above it, the distance from the closed door
to the pantry shelves, and the door’s height. A rack fits only if its hooks suit
the door, its baskets clear the shelves when the door closes, and the loaded weight
is within its rating.

## 1. Four checks before you buy

**Measure with the door closed**

 * **Door thickness:** at the top edge. Over-door hooks list the thicknesses they
fit; many interior doors are around 1⅜ inches, but measure yours.
 * **Gap above the door:** between the top of the closed door and the frame. Thick
hooks may stop the door closing.
 * **Shelf clearance:** from the back of the closed door to the front edge of the
nearest pantry shelf. The rack’s baskets must fit in this depth, with room for
   what’s in them.
 * **Door height and handle:** the rack’s total height, and whether the doorknob
or lever sits where a basket would go.

Also check the swing: if the door opens toward a wall or appliance, a loaded rack
adds depth on that side too.

## 2. Hook-on or screw-mounted?

| Mount | Good for | Watch out for |
| Over-door hooks | Renters; quick setup; lighter loads | Door gap, hook fit, rack sway when the door moves |
| Screw-mounted to the door | Heavier loads; less movement | Hollow-core doors may not hold screws well; follow the fastener guidance |
| Wall-mounted on the pantry wall | Very heavy items; walk-in pantries | Stud location and wall material |

Many systems come with both hooks and screw brackets. Hooks are simplest; adding
a lower bracket or bumper often reduces rattling.

## 3. What belongs on a door rack

 * **Good:** spices, packets, snacks, small jars, foil and wrap boxes.
 * **Careful:** cans and glass bottles. They add weight quickly; keep them on the
   lowest baskets.
 * **Avoid:** heavy bulk items better kept on a floor shelf.

Add up an approximate loaded weight and compare it with the rack’s rating. Heavier
loads also put more strain on the door hinges.

## Worked example: a reach-in pantry door

Imagine a door 1⅜ inches thick with about ⅛ inch of gap above it, and 5 inches from
the closed door to the front of the shelves. A rack with 4-inch-deep baskets fits
the depth, leaving an inch for jar lids and labels. The tight gap above the door
means very slim hooks or a screw-mounted bracket instead.

Before buying, tape a 4-inch-deep cardboard box to the back of the door at basket
height and close the door slowly. If it clears every shelf, a rack of that depth
will too.

**The no-buy starting point:** two over-door hooks and a narrow basket hold spices
and packets for a week. If you keep using it, a full rack is worth it.

## 4. What to buy

 1. A rack whose hooks match your door thickness and gap, or a screw-mount kit.
 2. Basket depth that clears your shelves.
 3. Door bumpers or felt pads to reduce noise.

### Compare over-door pantry racks

## Questions

Will it work on a hollow-core door?

Over-door hooks don’t depend on screws, so they usually work. Screw mounting into
a hollow-core door is less secure; use the manufacturer’s recommended fasteners
and keep loads lighter.

Why does my rack rattle?

The bottom of the rack swings when the door moves. A lower bracket, adhesive bumper,
or felt pad between the rack and door usually helps.

Can I use it on a closet or bathroom door?

Yes, with the same checks. In a bathroom, choose a finish suited to humidity.

## Under-Bed Storage: Bins, Drawers, or Bed Risers?

The space under a bed is often the largest unused storage area in a small bedroom.
Whether you can use it comes down to one number: the clearance from the floor to
the bed frame. Measure that first, and the choice between bins, drawers, and risers
mostly makes itself.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Measure the lowest point under the bed frame. Use low lidded bins for seasonal items,
rolling drawers for things you reach weekly, and bed risers only if you need more
height and your bed sits steadily on them.

It does not show under-bed storage.

## 1. Measure the clearance, not the bed

**What to measure**

 * **Lowest clearance:** from the floor to the lowest part of the frame, slats,
or center support, not just the side rail.
 * **Usable length and width:** between legs and any center support legs.
 * **Access side:** which side you can pull a bin out from, and how much floor space
you need to slide it fully out.
 * **Floor type:** carpet makes wheels harder to roll; hard floors may need felt
   or soft wheels.

## 2. Three options by clearance

| Option | Works when | Watch out for |
| Low lidded bins | Clearance is limited; items are seasonal | Bin height plus lid vs. lowest clearance |
| Rolling drawers | You’ll open it weekly; the floor suits wheels | Wheel height adds to total height; floor space to pull it out |
| Bed risers | You need more height and the bed legs fit the riser cup | Stability, the leg shape the riser is designed for, and bed weight |

## 3. What belongs under a bed

 * **Good:** out-of-season clothes, spare bedding, gift wrap, shoes you wear occasionally.
 * **Fine with a lid:** anything that would collect dust, which is most things.
 * **Avoid:** heavy items you lift often, and anything you need in a hurry.

Label each bin on the end that faces out, so you can find the right one without
pulling them all.

## Worked example: a queen bed with 7 inches of clearance

Imagine a queen bed with 7 inches from floor to slats and a center support leg.
Bins 6 inches tall with lids fit with an inch to spare. The center leg splits each
side into two sections, so two shorter bins per side, rather than one long one,
will slide out without catching.

If you need taller bins, risers could add height, but only if the bed’s legs match
the riser cups and the bed stays steady. Many people find two extra low bins on
the other side are enough.

**The no-buy starting point:** use the clean boxes your last delivery came in, trimmed
to height. They’ll tell you how many bins you need before you buy matching ones.

## 4. Stability checks for risers

 * Use risers that match your bed’s leg shape and size, and set every leg on a riser
   at the same height.
 * Check the riser’s weight rating against the bed, mattress, and people.
 * Don’t use risers on beds with wheels or casters unless the riser is designed
   for them.
 * Test by sitting on the edge and each corner. If anything wobbles, don’t use it.

## 5. What to buy

 1. Low lidded bins sized to your clearance.

## Questions

Fabric or plastic bins?

Plastic lidded bins keep out dust and are easy to wipe. Fabric bins are lighter
and quieter on hard floors but collect dust more. Choose by what you store and your
floor.

What if the bed has a storage drawer already?

Use it for what you reach most and put seasonal items in bins elsewhere. Check that
drawers and bins don’t block each other.

Is vacuum-sealing worth it?

It saves space for bulky bedding and coats. Some fabrics and down items can be affected
by long compression, so check care labels.

## Closet Shelf Dividers: How to Measure, Choose, and Fit Them

Folded sweaters and jeans look neat on a closet shelf for about a day. Then one
stack leans into the next and the whole shelf slides. Shelf dividers fix that cheaply,
but only if they fit your shelf’s thickness and leave the right spacing for what
you fold.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Measure the shelf’s thickness and the clear height above it. Clip-on dividers suit
wood or laminate shelves of the right thickness, freestanding dividers suit wire
shelves or renters, and open bins suit small or soft items. Space dividers to fit
one folded stack, plus a finger’s width.

## 1. Measure three things

**What to measure**

 * **Shelf thickness:** clip-on dividers list a range of thicknesses they grip.
   Measure at the front edge.
 * **Shelf material:** solid wood, laminate, or wire. Clip-on dividers usually need
   a solid shelf.
 * **Clear height and depth:** from the shelf to the shelf above or the ceiling,
and from the front edge to the wall.

Then fold one typical item, such as a sweater, the way you normally do and measure
the width and height of a stack of three or four.

## 2. Three types of divider

| Type | Works best on | Check first |
| Clip-on dividers | Solid wood or laminate shelves | Listed thickness range matches your shelf; divider height vs. clear height |
| Freestanding dividers | Wire shelves, deep shelves, rentals | Base footprint; stability when the stack beside it is removed |
| Open bins or baskets | Soft or small items, high shelves | Bin depth vs. shelf depth; a handle or label at the front |

Clip-on dividers grip the shelf and need no tools, which also makes them renter-
friendly. If your shelf is too thick, too thin, or wire, a freestanding divider
or a bin is the better choice.

## 3. Plan the spacing before you place them

Lay your folded stacks on the shelf first, then put a divider between each stack.
Leave about a finger’s width so you can slide a sweater out without lifting the
stack. Wider stacks such as jeans need wider bays; narrow items such as T-shirts
can be folded smaller to fit more bays.

Keep stacks low enough that you can see the top item and lift it without toppling
the rest. If you need a step stool for a high shelf, use bins there rather than
stacks.

## Worked example: a 36-inch shelf

Imagine a 36-inch shelf with 12 inches of clear height. Your folded sweaters are
about 11 inches wide. Three stacks take 33 inches; with two dividers between them
and a small gap at each end, the shelf is full. If the divider uprights are each
about half an inch thick, the plan still fits.

Need four bays? Fold sweaters narrower, to about 8 inches, or put the fourth group
in a bin on the shelf above. Don’t squeeze stacks so tightly that removing one sweater
drags the others.

**The no-buy starting point:** stand two hardback books on end between your stacks
for a week. If that keeps the shelf tidy, dividers will too.

## 4. What to buy

 1. Clip-on dividers if your shelf is solid and within the listed thickness range.
 2. Freestanding dividers or bins if it’s wire, very thick, or very deep.
 3. Labels for bins on high shelves.

## Questions

Do clip-on dividers damage shelves?

They can mark soft finishes if forced on. Check the thickness range, slide them
on rather than prying, and look for padded clips if your shelf is painted.

Will dividers work on wire shelving?

Most clip-on dividers are designed for solid shelves. On wire, use freestanding
dividers or bins, or lay a shelf liner first so stacks don’t sink between the wires.

How high should stacks go?

Low enough that you can see the top item and remove it without the stack falling,
usually three to five folded sweaters.

A standard base cabinet is close to two feet deep, and most of us only use the front
half. The fix isn’t more storage; it’s making the back reachable. Every method below
does one thing: brings the back of the cabinet to the front.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Put daily items in the front third, group the rest into handled bins you can slide
out like drawers, and add a pull-out only where you open the cabinet every day.
Measure the opening, not the box, before buying anything.

## 1. Think in front, middle, and back

FRONT
Daily

MIDDLE
Weekly

BACK
Occasional, in a bin

Planning sketch only, not to scale. Read left to right as front to back.

Empty the cabinet and sort what was in it by how often you use it. Daily items belong
in the front third. Anything occasional goes to the back, but always inside something
with a handle, so you pull the bin rather than reaching in.

## 2. Four ways to reach the back

| Method | Best for | Check first |
| Handled bins | Food storage containers, baking supplies, cleaning products | Bin length close to cabinet depth; handle at the front |
| Shelf risers | Plates, bowls, short cans | Height above the riser; riser depth vs. shelf depth |
| Vertical dividers | Baking sheets, cutting boards, trays | Height of the tallest item; mounting method |
| Pull-out organizer | Pots, pans, heavy items you use daily | Minimum opening, depth, and mounting; see our [pull-out comparison](https://kindredspacefinds.com/base-cabinet-pull-out-organizers-compared/) |

### Handled bins: the cheapest pull-out

A long bin with a handle behaves like a drawer without hardware. Choose a bin that
runs most of the cabinet’s depth, so nothing hides behind it. Keep loaded bins light
enough to lift with one hand.

### Risers for stacked dishes

A riser doubles one shelf into two levels. It helps most with plates and bowls,
where you would otherwise lift a stack to reach the one underneath.

### Dividers for flat items

Baking sheets and boards stored on edge are easier to slide out than a stack. Dividers
that tension or stand freely suit renters; screw-in dividers need the cabinet floor
and a clear mounting surface.

### Pull-outs where you open the door daily

A pull-out is the most convenient option and the most work to install. Put one in
the cabinet you open most, usually the one holding pots or everyday food containers.

## 3. Measure the opening, not the box

**What to measure**

 * Clear width at the narrowest point with the door open, including hinges and the
   face frame.
 * Usable depth from the face frame to the back wall or nearest pipe.
 * Clear height to any shelf above, and whether that shelf is adjustable.
 * The center stile, if a double-door cabinet has one: it splits the opening.

## Worked example: a 24-inch-deep corner of pots

Imagine a single-door base cabinet with a 13-inch clear opening, 22 inches of usable
depth, and a fixed shelf 14 inches above the floor. Pots are stacked on the floor
and lids are everywhere.

Option one: two handled bins, each about 6 inches wide and 20 inches long, on the
floor, one for lids and one for small pans, with the large pot standing at the front.
Option two: a single low pull-out that fits under the 14-inch shelf. Option one
costs less and needs no tools; option two is smoother if you cook daily. Start with
option one and upgrade only if it frustrates you.

**The no-buy starting point:** a shallow cardboard box with a hand-hole cut in the
front works as a test bin. Use it for a week before buying the real thing.

## 4. What to buy, and in what order

 1. Handled bins sized to your cabinet depth.
 2. Shelf risers for dish cabinets.
 3. Vertical dividers for baking sheets and boards.
 4. A pull-out for the one cabinet you open most.

## Questions

Should I remove the shelf in a base cabinet?

If you mainly store tall pots or want a full-height pull-out, removing an adjustable
shelf can help. If the shelf is fixed, plan around it instead.

Where should pot lids go?

On edge in a bin or a divider beside the pots, not stacked on top of them. Lids
stacked separately are what make a pot cabinet feel full.

Are lazy Susans good for deep cabinets?

They work best in corner cabinets and for small items. In a standard rectangular
cabinet, a round turntable leaves the corners unused.

Small bathrooms run out of flat surfaces fast, and many renters can’t drill into
tile or walls. You still have four places to work with: over the toilet, inside
the vanity, behind the door, and a small part of the counter. Use them in that order
and the counter stays clear.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated

**The short answer**

Keep only daily items on the counter, move backups into the vanity, add a freestanding
over-toilet unit for towels, and use the back of the door for robes and light baskets.
Measure before buying, and check that anything freestanding stands steadily.

## 1. Sort into daily, weekly, and backup

Empty the counter, the vanity, and any shelves. Sort into three groups:

 * **Daily:** toothbrush, face wash, the products you use every morning and night.
 * **Weekly:** hair tools, cleaning supplies, occasional skincare.
 * **Backup:** unopened toiletries, spare toilet paper, extra towels.

Daily items get the counter and the front of the vanity. Everything else moves out
of sight.

## 2. Four spaces you can use without drilling

| Space | Good for | No-drill options |
| Over the toilet | Towels, backup toiletries, a small basket | Freestanding over-toilet shelving |
| Inside the vanity | Backups, cleaning supplies, hair tools | Stacking drawers, bins, a door-mounted caddy that hooks over the door |
| Behind the door | Robes, towels, light baskets | Over-door hooks or racks |
| Counter | Daily items only | One tray or a small tiered organizer |

For the vanity, our [under-sink measuring guide](https://kindredspacefinds.com/under-sink-storage-measuring-guide/)
walks through pipes and hinges, and our [under-sink organizer comparison](https://kindredspacefinds.com/under-sink-organizers-compared/)
covers five specific models.

## 3. Measure before you buy

**What to measure**

 * **Over the toilet:** width between the wall and any vanity or tub, depth from
the wall to the front of the tank, and height to the ceiling or a light fixture.
 * **Toilet tank:** the width and height of the tank, so a freestanding unit straddles
it with clearance to lift the lid.
 * **Door:** thickness at the top, and the gap to the frame when closed.
 * **Vanity:** opening width, usable depth, and height below the pipes.

## Worked example: a 5-by-8 bathroom

Imagine a toilet with 24 inches of wall space beside it and a tank 18 inches wide.
A freestanding over-toilet unit needs legs outside the tank, so look for one with
an inside width comfortably over 18 inches and an outside width under 24. Check
that the lowest shelf sits high enough to lift the tank lid.

Inside the vanity, a pair of narrow stacking drawers on either side of the pipes
holds backups. Over the door, a rack with two hooks holds robes. The counter keeps
one tray with the daily items. Nothing was drilled, and the counter has room to
work.

**The no-buy starting point:** move every backup item into one box under the sink
for a week. If the counter stays clear, you’ve found the real problem was too much
on display, not too little storage.

## 4. Fit and safety checks

 * Freestanding over-toilet shelving can tip if loaded unevenly. Put heavier items
low, keep the top light, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on anti-tip straps.
 * Make sure the toilet lid and tank lid can still open fully.
 * Check that over-door hooks let the door close without forcing the latch.
 * Adhesive hooks can damage paint when removed. Test in an inconspicuous spot and
   follow the removal instructions.
 * Keep medicines and cleaning products out of children’s reach.

## 5. What to buy, and in what order

 1. A tray for the counter.
 2. Bins or stacking drawers for the vanity.
 3. A freestanding over-toilet unit, sized to your measurements.
 4. Over-door hooks or racks.

## Questions

Are tension-rod shelves a good idea?

They can work between two solid walls or in a shower, but they can slip if overloaded
or if the surfaces are uneven. Keep loads light and check the rated weight.

Where should towels go in a tiny bathroom?

One in use on a hook or bar, spares rolled on an over-toilet shelf or in a hall
closet. Rolled towels take less shelf width than folded ones.

Can I use adhesive hooks on tile?

Some are designed for tile and smooth surfaces. Check the product’s surface and
weight rating, and expect steam to weaken some adhesives over time.

## How to Organize a Spice Drawer So You Can Read Every Label

A spice cabinet hides labels behind each other; a spice drawer lets you see every
jar from above. That only works if the jars lie or stand so the labels face up,
and the drawer is deep enough to close. A little measuring decides whether you need
an insert at all.

**The short answer**

Measure the drawer’s inside width, depth, and height, and your most common jar.
Store jars lying down on a tiered insert or a non-slip liner if the drawer is shallow,
or upright with lid labels if it is deep. Arrange by how often you cook with each
spice, not only alphabetically.

## 1. Measure the drawer and your jars

**Four measurements**

 * **Inside width** of the drawer, wall to wall.
 * **Inside depth**, front to back.
 * **Clear height**: from the drawer floor to the underside of the countertop or
the drawer above, with the drawer closed. This is often less than the drawer’s
   side height.
 * **Your most common jar**: height and diameter, lid included.

Count your jars too. Most kitchens have a mix of sizes, so note how many are tall,
short, or bags and packets.

## 2. Lying down or upright?

| Layout | Works when | Watch out for |
| Lying down on a tiered insert | The drawer is shallow and jars are similar in size | Insert width vs. drawer width; jar length vs. tier depth |
| Lying down on a non-slip liner | You want a cheap, flexible layout | Jars can still roll if the drawer slams |
| Upright with lid labels | The drawer is deep enough for the tallest jar to clear | Labels must go on lids to be readable from above |
| Packets in a small bin | You buy spices in bags | Clip bags shut and label the top edge |

Lying jars down saves height and shows the side label. Standing them up fits more
jars into a deep drawer but needs labels on the lids.

## 3. Choose an order you’ll keep

Alphabetical order is easy to find but slow to cook from. Try this instead:

 1. **Front row:** the six to ten spices you use most weeks.
 2. **Middle:** grouped by cuisine or use, such as baking spices together.
 3. **Back:** rarely used spices and refills.

If you share the kitchen, alphabetical within each group is a good compromise.

## Worked example: a 15-inch drawer

Imagine a drawer 15 inches wide inside, 20 inches deep, and 3 inches of clear height.
Your common jar is about 4.5 inches tall with a 1.75-inch diameter. Standing upright,
it won’t clear 3 inches, so the jars must lie down.

Lying down, each jar takes about 1.75 inches across. A 15-inch row fits about eight
jars side by side with a little room to grip them. A tiered insert with three or
four rows front to back would hold roughly 24 to 32 jars, depending on the insert’s
tier depth. Before buying, check that the insert’s width fits inside 15 inches and
its tiers are long enough for a 4.5-inch jar.

**The no-buy starting point:** lay your jars in the drawer on a folded dish towel
for a week. If they stay put and you can read them, you may only need a non-slip
liner.

## 4. Keep it fresh and easy to reset

 * Write the purchase or opening date on the lid when you start a new jar.
 * Store spices away from the stove’s direct heat and steam where you can.
 * When you refill, put the new jar at the back of its group and use the older one
   first.
 * Do a two-minute check before a big grocery trip so you don’t buy duplicates.

## 5. What to buy, and in what order

 1. A non-slip drawer liner. It may be all you need.
 2. A tiered spice drawer insert, sized to your inside width.
 3. Uniform jars and labels, only if mismatched jars don’t fit the insert well.

## Questions

Is it worth moving everything into matching jars?

Only if your current jars don’t fit the drawer or the insert. Matching jars look
neat but take time to fill and label. Keep the original label information if you
decant.

Which drawer should hold spices?

One close to where you cook, but not directly above the stove or beside the oven
where heat builds up.

What about a very wide drawer?

Use two inserts side by side, or one insert plus a small bin for packets. Measure
the combined width first.

## Garage Wall Storage: Plan the Wall Before You Buy the System

Garage storage systems are sold as a finished wall, but your garage is a mix of
car doors, outlets, a water heater, and things you grab daily or twice a year. Plan
the wall around how you move through the space, and the right system becomes obvious.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated

**The short answer**

Sort what you own, divide the wall into three height bands, and fasten anything
heavy into studs. Use pegboard or rails for tools you reach often, sturdy shelving
for bins, and high space only for light, rarely used items.

## 1. Sort before you plan

Pull everything off one wall and sort into four groups. You can’t size a wall system
until you know what is going on it.

 * **Weekly tools:** drill, tape measure, gloves, the tools you reach for on most
   projects.
 * **Seasonal gear:** garden tools, sports equipment, holiday decorations.
 * **Long items:** rakes, shovels, ladders, extension cords.
 * **Bulk and backstock:** paint, spare supplies, bins of things you rarely open.

Anything you haven’t used in a couple of years is a candidate to donate, sell, or
dispose of properly. Check your local rules for paint and chemicals rather than
putting them in household trash.

## 2. Divide the wall into three height bands

HIGH
Light, seasonal

MIDDLE
Daily tools, eye level

LOW
Heavy bins, long items

Planning sketch only, not to scale. Read the bands from top to bottom.

 * **Middle band, roughly hip to shoulder height:** the tools you use most. This
is the most valuable space on the wall.
 * **Low band:** heavy bins and long-handled tools standing upright. Heavy things
belong low so you aren’t lifting them overhead.
 * **High band:** light, seasonal items only. Use a stable step stool or ladder
   to reach it.

Mark where the car doors swing, where you walk, and anything you must keep clear:
outlets, the electrical panel, the water heater, and the door to the house.

## 3. Match the format to what you store

| Format | Best for | Check first |
| Pegboard | Small hand tools you want visible | Pegboard needs a gap behind it for hooks; mount on furring strips or a frame |
| Slat wall or rail system | Mixed hooks, baskets, and long tools; easy to rearrange | Rated load for the rail and each hook; fastening into studs |
| Freestanding shelving | Bins and boxes | Shelf rating, depth that clears the car, anchoring to the wall |
| Wall-mounted shelves or brackets | Overflow above the reach zone | Bracket rating and stud spacing |

Many garages end up with two formats: a rail or pegboard section near the workbench
and shelving for bins elsewhere. That’s fine, as long as each one has a clear job.

## 4. Mounting and safety

**Before you drill**

 * Find the studs with a stud finder and confirm with a small test hole. Studs are
often 16 or 24 inches apart, but check yours.
 * Fasten heavy rails, shelves, and brackets into studs using the screws the manufacturer
   specifies, not drywall anchors.
 * Compare the product’s weight rating with what you plan to store, and don’t load
   to the limit.
 * Anchor tall freestanding shelving to the wall so it can’t tip.
 * Keep clear access to the electrical panel, water heater, and any shutoff valves.
 * Store paint, fuel, and chemicals as their labels direct, away from heat sources,
   and out of children’s reach.

If you rent, ask before drilling. Freestanding shelving that is anchored with a
small number of screws is often easier to agree than a full wall system.

## Worked example: an 8-foot wall beside the car

Imagine an 8-foot section of wall with 20 inches of clear depth before the car door
opens. Shelving 24 inches deep would block the door, so an 18-inch-deep shelf unit
is the limit for the low band. Above it, a 4-foot rail at shoulder height holds
the daily tools and a cord hook. The remaining 4 feet take long-handled garden tools
on upright hooks.

That plan uses the depth you have, keeps heavy bins low, and leaves the car door
working. It also means buying one shelf unit and one rail, not a full wall kit.

**The no-buy starting point:** for a week, lean long tools in one corner and keep
weekly tools in one bin by the door. Watch what you reach for. Then buy storage
for those items first.

## 5. What to buy, and in what order

 1. A stud finder, if you don’t have one.
 2. Shelving for the low band, sized to the depth you measured.
 3. A rail or pegboard section for weekly tools.
 4. Hooks matched to your long items.
 5. High shelving or brackets last, only if seasonal items still need a home.

## Questions

Pegboard or a rail system?

Pegboard is inexpensive and good for many small tools. Rails generally handle heavier
items and are easier to rearrange. Check the load rating of each hook either way.

Can I hang a bike on the wall?

Yes, with a hook or bracket rated for the bike’s weight and fastened into a stud.
Leave room to lift the bike on and off without hitting the car.

How deep should garage shelves be?

As deep as your bins, and no deeper than the space you can spare beside the car.
Measure with the car parked and its doors open.

## Shoe Storage for a Small Closet: Choose by Floor, Wall, or Door Space

Shoes take more room than almost anything else in a small closet, and they rarely
fit neatly. The right storage depends less on how many pairs you own than on which
space you can give up: a strip of floor, a shelf, or the back of the door.

By [Kindred Space Finds Editors](https://kindredspacefinds.com/about/) · Updated
October 20, 2026 · Practical organization guidance, not a product test

**The short answer**

Keep the pairs you wear weekly on the floor or a low rack, move occasional pairs
up to a shelf or into labeled boxes, and use the door only for flat, lightweight
shoes. Measure first: the space you have decides the format.

[Count and sort](https://kindredspacefinds.com/small-closet-shoe-storage/#count)

## 1. Count and sort before you measure

Pull every pair out and sort into three piles. Be honest about the third one.

 * **Weekly:** the shoes you actually wear most weeks.
 * **Seasonal or occasional:** boots, sandals, formal shoes, sport shoes.
 * **Not worn in a year:** candidates to donate, repair, or store elsewhere.

Only the weekly pile needs the most convenient spot. Seasonal pairs can go higher,
deeper, or under the bed.

## 2. Measure the space you can actually give up

Measure three places and write the numbers down.

**What to measure**

 * **Floor strip:** width of clear floor under the hanging clothes, and depth from
the back wall to the door frame.
 * **Clear height under hanging clothes:** floor to the bottom of your longest shirts
   or dresses.
 * **Door:** door thickness at the top, gap between the closed door and the frame,
and clearance to anything behind the door.

Then measure your largest regular pair: length heel to toe and height at the tallest
point. Many adult shoes need roughly 12 to 13 inches of depth per pair, but measure
yours rather than relying on a typical figure.

## 3. Three formats and where each one fits

| Format | Works best when | Watch out for |
| Floor rack (one or two tiers) | You have a clear floor strip under short hanging clothes | Tier spacing too low for high-tops or boots; rack depth wider than the floor strip |
| Shelf with dividers or boxes | You have a high shelf or an unused shelf section | Hard to reach daily; clear boxes help you see what’s inside |
| Over-door organizer | The door closes with room to spare and nothing is behind it | Hooks can stop the door closing; heavy shoes stretch pockets |

### Floor racks

A low rack keeps weekly pairs visible and off the floor so you can still vacuum
underneath. Stackable racks let you add a tier later. Check the clear height between
tiers against your tallest everyday shoe.

### Shelves and boxes

Use the top shelf for seasonal pairs. Uniform boxes stack more steadily than mixed
shoeboxes, and a label or photo on the front saves you opening each one.

### Over-door organizers

Good for flats, sandals, and slippers. Before buying, check that the hooks suit
your door thickness and that the door still closes with the organizer full.

## Worked example: a 30-inch floor strip

Imagine 30 inches of clear floor width, 14 inches of depth, and 26 inches of height
below your hanging clothes. A two-tier rack 28 inches wide fits the width with 2
inches to spare. At about 7 to 9 inches per adult pair, each tier holds roughly
three to four pairs side by side, so six to eight pairs in total.

If your weekly pile is ten pairs, that rack covers most of it. Put the remaining
two on the door or rotate them out, rather than buying a taller rack that blocks
your hanging clothes.

**The no-buy starting point:** line up your weekly pairs on the floor for a week,
heel against the back wall. If that strip stays tidy, you may only need a single
low rack, or nothing at all.

## 4. What to buy, and in what order

 1. **Nothing** until you have sorted and measured.
 2. **A low floor rack** sized to your floor strip, for weekly pairs.
 3. **Stackable clear boxes** for seasonal pairs on a shelf.
 4. **An over-door organizer** only if the door test passes.

### Compare shoe storage

## Questions

Where do tall boots go?

Lying flat in a long box on a shelf, or standing on the floor with boot shapers.
Most low racks don’t have the tier height for tall boots.

Should shoes go in boxes?

For occasional pairs, yes: boxes keep dust off and stack well. For weekly pairs,
open storage is faster and lets damp shoes air out.

What if I rent?

Freestanding racks and over-door organizers need no screws. Check that over-door
hooks won’t scratch the door or frame.
