Most desk clutter you notice is actually cable clutter: a knot behind the monitor,
a power strip on the floor, a charger that falls behind the desk every night. You
don’t need a new desk to fix it. You need a map, one route, and a few inexpensive
holders.

**The short answer**

Unplug and label everything, mount the power strip under the desk, run cables along
a single path to it, and leave the cables you touch every day (chargers, headphones)
at the surface on a short, fixed spot.

## 1. Map every cable before you buy anything

Unplug everything at the desk and lay the cables out on the floor. Sort them into
three groups. This tells you how many holders you need and where they go.

| Group | Examples | Where it should live |
| Fixed power | Monitor, computer, lamp, speakers | Hidden under the desk, routed to the power strip |
| Fixed data | Monitor cable, ethernet, dock, keyboard receiver | Hidden, but kept separate enough to unplug one device |
| Daily touch | Phone charger, headphones, laptop charger | At the desk surface, on one fixed spot |

Label both ends of each cable with masking tape and a pen. When something stops
working in six months, you will know which plug to pull.

## 2. Pick one route from desk to wall

Look at where the wall outlet is and where the desk legs are. Choose one path: usually
up the back leg nearest the outlet, then along the underside of the desk to a central
point. Everything follows that path. Two or three routes are what make a desk look
messy again.

## 3. Step by step

 1. **Mount the power strip under the desk.** Many strips have keyhole slots on the
back for screws. If yours doesn’t, a tray or a strip holder works. Keep it off
the floor, away from feet and spills.
 2. **Add a tray or basket for slack.** An under-desk cable tray holds the power strip
and the coiled extra length of each cord. Measure your desk depth and the distance
    between legs or drawers first.
 3. **Plug in fixed power first.** Route each device’s cord straight down to the tray.
Coil the excess loosely and fasten it with a reusable hook-and-loop tie. Avoid
    tight bends.
 4. **Run fixed data cables second.** Bundle them along the same route but keep them
in their own tie so you can swap one without rebuilding everything.
 5. **Run a single cord down to the wall.** Use a cable sleeve or a few adhesive clips
on the rear leg so only one neat line reaches the outlet.
 6. **Set up the daily-touch spot.** Bring the chargers you use every day to one corner
of the desk and hold the ends with a weighted cable clip or desk-edge clip so they
    don’t drop behind.
 7. **Test, then tidy.** Turn everything on, move the desk chair, and open any drawers.
Adjust anything that pulls or rubs.

**The no-buy starting point:** a shoebox lid screwed or taped under the desk, plus
the twist ties from your device packaging, will show you whether a tray is worth
buying. Test it for a week.

## 4. Safety checks that matter more than looks

 * Don’t plug one power strip into another or into an extension cord. University
safety offices, including [Weill Cornell EHS](https://ehs.weill.cornell.edu/node/753),
warn against this kind of daisy-chaining.
 * Don’t run cords under rugs or pinch them in drawers or chair wheels.
 * Leave space around power bricks and adapters; don’t bury them in a closed box.
 * Check the power strip’s rating and don’t plug in high-draw appliances such as
   space heaters.
 * Replace any cord with damaged insulation rather than taping it.

## 5. What to buy, and what to skip

Buy in this order, and stop when the desk works.

| Priority | Item | Check first |
| 1 | Reusable hook-and-loop ties | Width and length suit your thickest cord |
| 2 | Under-desk cable tray | Desk depth, space between legs, mounting method |
| 3 | Cable sleeve or leg clips | Diameter fits your bundle; adhesive suits your desk finish |
| 4 | Desk-edge or weighted cable clips | Desk thickness; how many charger ends you need to hold |

Skip large cable boxes for the floor unless you have no way to lift the power strip.
They tend to trap heat and collect dust, and you still have cords running to them.

## Questions

Will adhesive clips damage my desk?

They can lift paint or veneer when removed. Test one in a hidden spot, or choose
clips that screw in or clamp to the desk edge if you rent or want to move the desk
later.

What about a standing desk?

Leave a loop of slack at the point where cables leave the desk, long enough for
the full height range. Raise and lower the desk once before you fasten anything
permanently.

How do I keep it tidy?

When you add a device, route its cable along the existing path the same day. A cable
left loose “for now” is how the knot returns.
